Novartis has announced that it has entered into a licensing and equity agreement with Boston Pharmaceuticals for the development of three novel anti-infective drug candidates that are part of the Novartis Infectious Diseases portfolio, which have the potential to address the need for new agents to treat antibiotic resistant Gram-negative infections.

Positive phase III results for baloxavir marboxil in people at high risk of complications from influenza to be presented at IDWeek 2018

Roche has announced that the phase III CAPSTONE-2 study showed treatment with baloxavir marboxil significantly reduced the time to improvement of influenza symptoms versus placebo (median time of 73.2 hours versus 102.3 hours; p<0.0001) in people at high risk of serious complications from the flu, which includes adults 65 years of age or older, or those who have conditions such as asthma, chronic lung disease, morbid obesity, or heart disease. Baloxavir marboxil was well-tolerated and no new safety signals were identified.

FDA approves Roche’s Hemlibra for haemophilia A without factor VIII inhibitors

Roche has announced that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Hemlibra® (emicizumab-kxwh) for routine prophylaxis to prevent or reduce the frequency of bleeding episodes in adults and children, ages newborn and older, with haemophilia A without factor VIII inhibitors. Hemlibra is now the only prophylactic treatment for people with haemophilia A with and without factor VIII inhibitors that can be administered subcutaneously (under the skin) and at multiple dosing options (once weekly, every two weeks or every four weeks). This approval is based on positive results from the phase III HAVEN 3 and HAVEN 4 studies. Hemlibra prophylaxis led to statistically significant and clinically meaningful reductions in treated bleeds compared to no prophylaxis (primary endpoint) and across all other bleed-related endpoints in the HAVEN 3 study, and showed a clinically meaningful control of bleeding in the HAVEN 4 study.

Akcea Therapeutics, Inc., an affiliate of Ionis Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and Ionis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. , have announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved TEGSEDITM (inotersen) for the treatment of the polyneuropathy of hereditary transthyretin-mediated amyloidosis in adults. TEGSEDI is now approved in the U.S., European Union and Canada.

Loxo Oncology Announces LOXO-292 Durability Update in Patients with RET-Mutant Medullary Thyroid Cancer and RET Fusion-Positive Thyroid Cancer from LIBRETTO-001

Loxo Oncology, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company developing highly selective medicines for patients with genomically defined cancers, has announced updated interim clinical data for LOXO-292 from the global Phase 1/2 LIBRETTO-001 trial in patients with RET-mutant medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) and RET fusion-positive thyroid cancer who were initially included in the LOXO-292 presentation at the 2018 ASCO Annual Meeting. In these 38 patients, approximately 3.5 months of additional patient follow-up were available, as were first follow-up scans for the nine patients most recently enrolled. Sixteen of 17 (94%) responding RET-mutant MTC patients remained on therapy, with median follow-up of 8.4 months. Seven of seven (100%) responding RET fusion-positive thyroid cancer patients remained on therapy, with median follow-up of 8.5 months. Inclusion of new restaging data for the most recently enrolled patients resulted in a 59% overall response rate (56% confirmed overall response rate) in the presented subset of RET-mutant MTC patients, and a 78% confirmed overall response rate in the presented subset of RET fusion-positive thyroid cancer patients.

Novartis announces FDA and EMA filing acceptance of siponimod, the first and only drug shown to meaningfully delay disability progression in typical SPMS patients

Novartis has announced that both the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and European Medicines Agency (EMA) have accepted the company’s New Drug Application (NDA) and Marketing Authorization Application (MAA) respectively, for investigational oral, once-daily siponimod (BAF312) for the treatment of secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (SPMS) in adults. This phase of multiple sclerosis (MS) can substantially impact lives, due to physical and cognitive impairments. To bring this treatment to the MS community as quickly as possible, Novartis used a review voucher to expedite the review of siponimod in the US.
